The Martha Dendy Community Center stands on sacred and historic ground—land that has long been a cornerstone of education, resilience, and community advancement in Laurens County. What began in 1883 as the Friendship School, founded by members of Friendship AME Church in a simple brush arbor, became the first educational opportunity for African Americans in the area. Over the decades, this site evolved into Bell Street School and later Martha Dendy School, serving generations of students and becoming the only place where African American students in Laurens County could earn a high school diploma during segregation.
More than a school, this space was a center for progress and possibility. It played a vital role in the Civil Rights movement, hosting meetings, fostering advocacy, and empowering community members to pursue equity and justice. Named after Mrs. Martha Dendy—a woman whose life reflected perseverance, entrepreneurship, and an unwavering commitment to education—the legacy of this place is deeply rooted in strength, sacrifice, and vision.
BUILDING OUR FUTURE.
Today, the Martha Dendy Community Center is building upon that legacy. While the original school structures have evolved over time, the purpose of this space remains the same: to serve as a hub for opportunity, connection, and growth. As we work to restore and redevelop the property, we are creating a modern, inclusive environment that offers educational programming, recreational activities, community services, and opportunities for civic engagement.
Looking ahead, the Martha Dendy Community Center represents more than revitalization—it represents renewal. We are committed to honoring the past while actively shaping a future where individuals and families have access to the resources, support, and opportunities they need to thrive. From after-school programs to community events and workforce development initiatives, this space will once again be a place where lives are changed, connections are built, and the community comes together.
We invite you to be a part of this legacy—past, present, and future.
